This is 6 of 6 for my project. I took this picture from a street in providence heading into the city. I liked the way the white lines - marking parking spaces- contrasted against the black pavement. I also noticed the rows of picturesque street lamps and thought they might add a nice touch, especially since they were lit. I thought that the way the road leads into the city might also make for a nice shot. I got down close to the ground a pointed my camera up a bit to add an interesting point of view. I think that this photo looks good in black in white because of the lights, both on the buildings and lining the streets, and the parking spaces on the street. Dave Beckerman often takes photos of the city at night and what makes his night images so interesting are the various forms of lights. I really enjoyed this assignment and learned a lot. It is really hard to imitate a professional but I had fun trying. I chose Dave Beckerman because of the way he captures the diversity of everyday city life and then simplifies and unifies it by portraying it in black and white. He emphasizes white whites and black blacks, making his pictures beautiful and interesting.

Number 5 of 6 for my final project. This is a cathedral near RISDs campus that I have been wanting to photograph for quite some time. I think the building’s architecture lends itself to the contrast of a black and white image. I shot looking up because I thought a unique angle would add visual interest to the image.

I took this photo for a surrealism project. If you look closely, you’ll see that all three subjects are in actuality the same subject. I had her dress in three different “period costumes” and stand by different graves but always holding the same flower. I created this surreal image by combining three different photos in photoshop.

I went back to the same tunnel to reshoot, but this time at night. The lights inside the tunnel create rings of light that contrast against the blackness. The surrounding ambient light was just enough that I could set the camera on a relatively low ISO without underexposing the image. I really like the way the sky looks in this particular shot. It was actually much darker outside than this image seems.

#4 of 8 for my final project. This one worked well because of the dark shadows on the left and bright sunlight on the right. I think this frames the subject (the statue ) pretty well. Making the image black in white increased the contrast and added more visual interest to the shot.

These two photos were both taken on Thayer Street in Providence, RI. I looked for settings that would have a stark contrast between blacks and whites. The tunnel is totally black while much of its surroundings are much lighter. Dave Beckerman plays with lights and reflections in some of his photos, so that is what I tried to do in the second photo. I was in “Better Burger” on Thayer Street and managed to get an image of this angular mirror without me in it.

This is one of my own photos. For my final photography project I need to imitate a photographer and I chose Dave Beckerman. He is not a famous photographer but I really enjoy his work. He does quite a bit of black and white city photography. I really love the way he contrasts light lights and dark darks in all of his black and white images. He manages to capture everyday, ordinary places in the city with interest and excitement.
